The result of wearing a corset to health is a theme, discussed seldom to the point. In addition, this behaviour is according a well-known tradition. As long as corsets are available, there are people describing the corset as a garment, which is dangerous to health. Up to now-a-days, meanings of physician of the 19.Century are quoted to demonstrate, how dangerous a corsets is. They use still those arguments, which are scientifically out-dated and not to be maintained further on. Other arguments, as for instance hygienic problems (at this time showers had been neither known nor available), are today meaningless additionally. The following statements are based on discussions with doctors of this day and experiences of corset wearing people.
It can be stated in general, that wearing a corset is of no evidence in any respect to health, as long as a person, healthy to some extent, wears a well fitted and not too tightly laced corset of high quality. It can easily be under stud, that best form-fit is in aspect to health of high importance. An insufficient fitted corset creates pressure marks, chafes and squeezing marks to the skin. Although this is not a special risk, because nobody would wear such an improper corset for a longer time. No question that can't be healthy. Less obvious is the fact, that all corsets normally have stays or other parts made of metal, so it is to be secured, that such parts lead not to any injury. No doubt, low quality corsets or wearied-off one can have broken metal parts or the protecting linen of the stays gets pierced by rubbing-off, so that at least a safety risk for health can occur. Therefore it is recommended, not to wear a corset with defect metal parts.
Up to this point, all statements are in regards to corsets, which are not tight laced. But the question is: what is not tight laced? And what about the question, the corset is to be laced extremely tight? Answering the first question, which is relatively easy: a generally fixed dimension does not exist; there are extreme individual differences from person to person. In case, a female or male corset-wearer does not feel the corset after approx. one hour as to small and unpleasant and if this god feeling lasts on the next hours, the size and fit is correct; the person is in respect to health on the safe side.
Much more of interest, focused on medical aspects, is the extreme tight-laced corset. A well-known and brought spread prejudice stats, that inner organs in the waist-area are to be pushed away, forced to find an other place, for instance in the abdomen. That is partially correct only, because this type of organs are hollow-organs (like stomach, lunge, bowel) with variation of volume, depending on the level of filling. If the body has sufficient time to get accustomed to the corset, the body is able to adjust itself to the smaller available space. Especially the women's body has no problem with the move of these inner organs in the abdomen; in case of pregnancy a similar movement is forced much more extremely, but very slow. It last 9 months.
The subject gets delicate in so far, if in case of ambition (mostly occurring an important event is expected in near future) the corset should be laced in a short time extremely tight. The individual level of convenience of a tight-laced corset differs as well from person to person as from type of corset to an other one. Sometimes, a female/male corset-wearer, made by a specific manufacturer gives best performance, sometimes a specific style only. Therefore, overall-statements cannot be replaced by individual experiences. Here, some warning signals will be given, describing the individual maximum level of tight lacing. Some nausea or dizziness, heat-spells of the body, headaches, and difficulty in breathing, increased pulsation up to heart attacks or aches by pressure are remarkable and distinct indications, that the maximum level of tight lacing is reached (or exceeded). The only way to overcome such attacks is to loosen the laces. Additional, the quantity of food and beverages can affect someone's comfort, laced into a corset. Too opulent dinners should be avoided at ambitioned tight lacing (nevertheless, some Ladies have the behaviour of an artist for opulent dinners without an effect on their wasp-waist in respect to comfort). Specifically food with swelling effect, like rice, cereals or carbonic aerated beverages (like Coca-Cola) can mar your healthy comfort. No doubt, any food cause flatulence should be avoided. Theatrical fainting-attacks (also an often repeated bias against corsets) at real meetings of corset-enthusiasts are hardly to see. Who participates first time at such a meeting, may be astonished on the wasp-waist laced ladies, merry talking and eating all time without any symptom to sink down by a fainting attack. At balls or other events, extended dancing is quite common.
Of course, there are some corset-enthusiasts, wearing their "best garment" not only at special events, but also very often for daily use. Without any hesitation to health is the medium laced corset also in such cases. Additional, for special defined activities, the corset creates a positive effect on health for the wearer, for instance for computer work. The wearer is more or less forced to sit straight, relieving the spine. However, it is obvious, not every type or stile of corset is adequate for such activities. For such long lasting work, sitting at a chair in front of a monitor, the pelvis area should be laced not too tight. It is to be recommended, to ask for adequate advises of an experienced designer, manufacturer or purchaser in this field. The enthusiast, wearing a corset very often (or all time), should have adequate gymnastics to avoid a stiff torso. It is highly recommended to have sufficient time for a rest and relaxation exercises between corset-wearing and sporting activities.
At the end, here some additional remarks referring to "real tight-lacing". That means, someone wears the corset nearly all-the-day (23/7), tight laced for a long period with the goal to modify the body's-shape permanently. Tight-lacer can be seen similar as top-sportsmen among the (female/male) corset-enthusiasts. Not everyone, who likes to ride a bicycle, wont to train for the "Tour de France", but if she/he decide to train, she/he has the need to implement health-aspects much more into her/his considerations than others. Corset-wearers should do just the same; but this does not indicate, that tight-lacing is unhealthy on principle. A high number of examples are reported, that Ladies, tight-laced all their life, got as old as the hills. Moreover, versus occasionally tight lacing, it is essential to pay sufficient attention on all reactions of the body. Who aspires for records, like a top-sportsman, should consult a doctor for individual advises on health on a regular base.
Some diseases are known, which recommend to prevent the wear of a corset or it might be less advisable to do so. In case, someone has circulatory disturbance or heart trouble, other diseases of lungs or respiration problems, diseases of vessels (here in specific phlebitis) and some diseases of digestive organs, is better to wear no corset or, as a minimum, not before a doctor's consultation and his advises. Similar recommendations are valid in case of irritation of skin, which can be solved sometimes by selecting an other type of fabrics. As mentioned above, a corset can be highly recommended in case of spine-problems. However, it can occur, that someone's spine does not accepta certain type of corset. So again, that is a good reason additionally, not to buy a corset by Mail Order, but ask for advises of an expert and do not hurry in time selecting "your corset" by extended test-fitting, covering your individual wants and needs for a maximum.
